The Government and people of Papua New Guinea presented a gift to the Government and people of the United Arab Emirates during the PNG National Day at the world expo in Dubai.
Deputy Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Honorable Sam Basil presented the “garamut” during the official gift exchange ceremony which formed part of the national day program.
The garamut is a Papua New Guinea traditional dug out wood carved into a drum shape and is beaten in different styles of rhythms to communicate different messages to the people.
The gift was received by His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence Commissioner General of Expo 2020 Dubai.
In presenting the gift Hon Basil said that the garamut is a sign of strengthening and deepening the friendship that exists between the two governments and peoples and he was privileged to present the gift on behalf of the people of PNG.
Honorable Sam Basil and the PNG delegation were also given a VIP tour of the UAE Pavilion after he led the UAE delegation to the PNG Pavilion. When at the UAE Pavilion Hon. Basil also signed the Book of Honor.
